Paccar Inc. announced a recall of 76,490 Peterbilt Motors Co. and Kenworth Truck Co. models saying the 15-inch digital display may freeze and not display critical safety information, leaving the vehicles outside of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulatory compliance.
The truck maker estimated 1% of the recalled units will have the defect, which involves faulty software. The loss of display information, such as vehicle speed and warning lights, can increase the risk of a crash, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The fix is updated software.
The recalls cover 2022-2023 Kenworth T680, T880 and W990, and Peterbilt 365, 367, 389, 567 and 579 vehicles, according to Paccar.
Dealers will update the software free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed Dec. 16.
